Cape creation and preparation of tutorial
Sewing studio P&L Mercier

  • 1 ½ yards of reversible wool or more depending on the desired length. Warning: if the fabric is printed, be sure to buy double the desired length
  • 4 cones or four spools of matching polyester serger thread
  • Sewing thread in matching or contrast colors
  • Chalk, pins, measuring tape, scissors, hand-sewing needle

  • elna serger from the eXtend series (in this tutorial the elna eXtend 864air)
  • elna electronic sewing machine, for example from the eXperience or eXcellence series (in this tutorial the eXcellence 720PRO)
  • Standard foot A

Fold your fabric’s edges together.

Lay the pattern on the fabric, place the front and back pattern pieces on the fold of the fabric, allow a 3/8 inch seam allowance on the sides, including the hem.

Cut out 3/8 inch from the edge, the front and the back, the two arm openings and the collar.

Set up your serger for a 4-thread overlock stitch.

After all of your cape pieces are cut out, use the serger to cleanly cut the edges of the sides of the cape, including the collar, providing a clean finish to the fabric edges. Serge the inside edge of the two arm openings. The hem will be finished at the end.

Sew the two collar pieces together with a basting stitch on your sewing machine and then use the serger to finish the seam. Once all the pieces have been finished with the serger, tie a knot in thread tails and use a large-eyed needle to pull the thread tails into the seam.

Select the straight stitch on your 720 PRO. Sew the shoulder seams and side seams of the cape.

Once the pieces are assembled, try on the cape, then determine the desired length and finish the edge with the serger. Finally, tie a knot in thread tails and use a large-eyed needle to pull the thread tails into the seam.

Congratulations, your cape is finished!
